Your brain’s electrical activity, brain waves, or thought patterns are unlike anyone else’s. Just like your fingerprint, your brain waves are uniquely your own. The human brain contains approximately 100 billion neurons. Through electrical oscillations or brain waves, the neurons control how the brain functions. Whenever internal or external forces disrupt normal brain activity, dysfunction can occur. That’s what makes our approach so cutting edge.
What is MeRT?
MeRT stands for Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy.
Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, or MeRT, is a non-surgical, non-invasive, and non-pharmacological, emerging technology that, in simple terms, is used to reprogram abnormal electrical signals in the patient’s brain to ultimately modify behavior. The MeRT protocols utilize brainwave analysis to isolate specific areas of the brain that are not functioning or communicating the way they should. Then using specialized equipment, we gently stimulate the distinct areas of the brain that ultimately lead to improved function.
Treatment overview involves using MeRT as an individualized approach by obtaining a qEEG, which is a diagnostic study that measures the pattern of electrical signals in the patient’s brain. This study not only tells us what is not functioning properly in the brain but also helps us determine how the brain should be operating. Using this information, we then create a precision treatment protocol using a set of magnets placed on the patient’s scalp to send electrical signals back into the brain in a manner that causes re-organization of the signals, thereby stimulating and organizing the function of neurons in the brain. This process is called Neuromodulation.

What is the difference between MeRT and rTMS?
MeRT is different from other similar technologies because of our highly individualized approach utilizing the patient’s own brain waves to make a treatment plan, while other similar technologies (rTMS) have a predetermined treatment protocol based mostly on the diagnosis.
This is a cutting-edge treatment protocol that combines technologies of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS, an FDA cleared therapy), Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG), and Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) to analyze and formulate tailored treatments for each individual’s unique brain pattern. In other words, your treatment is qEEG-guided based on your specific brain activity.
Most rTMS treatments are used to deliver stimulation to one area of the brain at a fixed frequency. Our MeRT approach treatment overview is highly individualized because all treatment is qEEG-guided as to frequency and location based on initial thorough testing and evaluation. This customized, scientific approach is unique to each patient.
Definition of Terms:
rTMS = Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation: a non-invasive therapy that utilizes pulsed magnetic fields to change neural activity.
EEG = Electroencephalogram: a non-invasive procedure that records the electrical activity of the brain.
EKG = Electrocardiogram (also known as ECG): a non-invasive procedure that records the electrical activity of the heart.
Steps We Follow: Treatment Overview
We begin with our diagnostic tool, a quantitative electroencephalogram (q-EEG) and an electrocardiogram (EKG). These tests measure brain wave frequencies, heart rate, and brain-heart coherence, which will be used to determine the current state and functioning of the brain. The qEEG provides the information for us to create a brain “map” that identifies patterns of dysfunction consistent with various disorders of the brain such as brain injury, emotional disorders, learning problems, and behavioral issues.
Once done, our scientific and clinical teams will carefully analyze the results and determine the current state and functioning of the brain.
Analysis & Protocol
As part of our treatment overview, we use a patented, scientific approach with the neurophysiological data gathered through testing to then develop a highly customized treatment plan that is aimed at encouraging healthy brain communication and function.
You will simply sit in a comfortable chair while a trained technician carefully positions the magnet against your head. on your head. This device produces a magnetic field to induce mild currents in targeted regions of the brain. There is no pain and no electrical currents, just a slight sensation.
Stimulation is applied for 6-8 seconds per minute. Generally, appointments last anywhere from 30-45 minutes.
The neuromodulation equipment used by the MeRT approach has been cleared by the FDA in the treatment of depression and may be used off-label for other disorders in the practice of medicine.
Following the initial week or 2 weeks of the assessment period of treatment, depending on your condition and age, we will perform an additional EEG and EKG, allowing us to assess progress and make any needed modifications. In this way, we are always taking the best and most exacting approach with your treatment, based on the current neurological state of your brain patterns.

Mini-Documentary about MeRT Treatment
This documentary explains the MeRT treatment overview protocols and how it works.
MeRT Featured on Dr. Mark Hyman’s “Broken Brain” Podcast for Treatment of PTSD, Concussion, TBI
The famous podcast, “The Broken Brain,” promoted by Dr. Mark Hyman, featured utilizing MeRT for treatment of PTSD, Concussions, and Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI). If you or someone you know has experienced any of these conditions it is certainly worth listening to this.
Dr. Erik Won, from our Brain Treatment Center in California, speaks about the utilization of this technology to treat members of the military who have had traumatic brain injuries, concussions, or who have experienced PTSD as a result of their experiences, with many incredible successes, and further explains the treatment overview.
With other repercussions that can occur, for both military and veterans, this is incredibly important. For example, suicide is at twice the rate for veterans, with approximately 17 veteran deaths per day. In a high-stress environment, such as serving in the military, the transition afterward can be complicated and there are often underlying reasons for conditions that may occur. MeRT may help to address these issues.
We highly recommend you listen to this incredible presentation.

Is MeRT the Right Treatment?
We understand that MeRT is a relatively new, cutting-edge treatment and you may not be certain if this is right for your situation. But this is not a decision that needs to be made right away or all alone.
Your first step would be a simple phone consultation with our New Patient Coordinator. Here you can discuss symptoms and history, ask all the questions you want, and have her explain the protocols, fees, and she can further explain the treatment overview.
If you are interested in taking the next step in seeing if MeRT treatment is right for you, we can set up an appointment for an EEG (a simple, painless, and non-invasive brain scan).
Your first appointment with us will consist of us performing a qEEG (quantitative EEG)/EKG test which is used to evaluate brain activity and will show us any dysfunction or communications that are occurring. A qEEG is sometimes referred to as a “brain map” and shows exact areas of the brain that are experiencing dysfunction. This tool is valuable as it allows us to customize treatment specifically for YOU. This test is performed by our chief neuro technician and takes approximately 45-minutes to complete, however, if you are seeking treatment for your child with autism, please plan on spending an hour with us. We will also gather your new patient paperwork at this time, and get you scheduled for your initial assessment period of treatment.
The second appointment is a clinical evaluation with Kate Ryan, R.N., and takes approximately 45-minutes. This appointment can be completed via Telemedicine or in-clinic, whichever you prefer. Please note that if you choose a Telemedicine appointment and are seeking treatment for your child, your child will need to be present. During this consultation, Kate will answer any questions you may have and discuss your applicable treatment plan. Additionally, you will have an opportunity to meet with our physician and Medical Director, Julie Kim, M.D.
6-weeks of treatment is recommended for patients undergoing MeRT in order to achieve optimal and long-lasting results. However, prior to committing to the 6-weeks of treatment, we have each patient first go through an assessment period of treatment to see how they will respond. The assessment period is included in the 6-weeks of treatment.
The assessment is 1 to 2 weeks long depending on the age of the patient. For children who are 10 years and younger, the assessment period is 1 week in length. It consists of attending 4 treatment sessions, Monday through Thursday, and is followed by a repeat qEEG to determine progress.
Assessment for anyone 11 years and older is 2-weeks in length and consists of 9 treatment sessions followed by a repeat qEEG. Treatment would be provided the first week, Monday through Friday, and the following week, Monday through Thursday. A typical treatment session lasts about 30-45 minutes.
Additionally, the follow-up qEEG results will be covered with you by your provider.
If clinical changes are occurring as they should, and the qEEG also shows progress, then you would then continue treatment which would occur 5 days per week, Monday through Friday. Generally, you will begin to feel the benefits of treatment within a week or two, but because treatment is cumulative, should continue to note improvements throughout the course of your treatment, and even for some weeks after treatment. Because treatment is consecutive, you must be able to stay in or around the Newport Beach area while undergoing your therapy.
An additional option for treatment overview is for those who are not ready to commit to an assessment period, or if we need to see the results of the testing to confirm that MeRT can help, we also offer the option of coming in for a qEEG/EKG and then having a consultation with Kate and/or Dr. Kim to go over the results. After your clinical consultation, you will still have the option of going through an assessment period should you choose to do so.
Improvements and results of MeRT are based on strict and active observation of our treatment protocols. Results may vary based on each person and are not guaranteed.
Because each person’s brains and conditions are unique, treatment protocols are customized specifically for each individual which are guided by the qEEG results. Repeat qEEGs and clinical consultations occur every 2-weeks throughout treatment. The effects of treatment generally last a lifetime, though some folks do prefer occasional follow-up treatment as needed.
During your treatment session, you will sit in a comfortable chair while the neuro technician administers this gentle treatment with a hand-held magnet that is held near the scalp. While you may feel a slight sensation during treatment, it is not painful or uncomfortable. Magnetic pulses are delivered for 6-8 seconds during each minute of treatment.
Potential side-effects of treatment are minimal and should begin to dissipate after you begin to progress through treatment.
