ADHD

A Drug-Free Treatment for ADHD is Available at the Brain Treatment Center in San Diego

Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, or MeRT, is a non-invasive and drug-free treatment. It uses a gentle, magnetic field to balance brain function and is guided by sophisticated imaging based on each individual’s specific brain patterns.

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a neurological condition that can make it hard to concentrate and focus. It involved a combination of symptoms such as impulsive behavior, hyperactivity, and difficulty paying attention. These can result in learning difficulties, below-average school/job performance, and even relationship troubles and low self-esteem. Our clinic in San Diego treats children who are 3 years and older.

Other conditions can accompany ADHD, including:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Anxiety
  • Mood disorders
  • OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder)
  • Learning disabilities
  • Tourette syndrome
  • Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder

Every person will experience ADHD differently. If not addressed during childhood, it can continue on into the teenage years and adulthood.

Symptoms of ADHD vary but can include the following:

  • Difficulty learning because of short attention span
  • Finding it hard to focus
  • Easily distracted
  • Not listening to others
  • Inability to be still, hyperactivity
  • Lack of follow-through on tasks
  • Poor organizational skills
  • Easily distracted
  • Fidgety
  • Talking too much
  • Interrupting people who are engaged in other activities
  • Impatience

Genetics may play a part, and problems with the central nervous system can contribute. However, the exact cause of ADHD is not known.

Some research shows that there is a link between ADHD and gut health. According to the Mayo Clinic, other risk factors can include:

  • Blood relatives with ADHD or another mental health disorder
  • Exposure to environmental toxins such as lead mainly found in older buildings
  • Maternal drug use, alcohol use, or smoking during pregnancy
  • Premature birth

ADHD Conventional Treatment

Physicians commonly prescribe an array of medications to treat ADHD. Some medications can balance the levels of some of the neurotransmitters in the brain. Though not a cure, these meds can help to manage symptoms. Other times, antidepressants may be prescribed, though these types of drugs do come with the risk of suicidal ideations and work more slowly.

Other forms of behavioral therapies may also help such as neurofeedback, psychotherapy, and behavioral therapy.

MeRT Treatment For ADHD

At the Brain Treatment Center in San Diego, we offer a non-invasive and drug-free treatment for ADHD called MeRT. MeRT is a more precise version of TMS or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. It is a more individualized approach to neuromodulation, and we tailor the treatment to the patient’s exact needs based on frequency, location, and power used.

MeRT is an emerging technology that aims to improve brain function and communication. The equipment used is FDA-cleared to treat Major Depressive Disorder and OCD and is used off-label to treat a wide variety of conditions, including ADHD.

MeRT involves using a gentle magnetic field that passes through the scalp from an electromagnetic coil. This process is completely painless and gentle. Each session lasts about 30 minutes, and the patient can finish and go about their daily activities.

With MeRT, we use a qEEG, or quantitative EEG, to analyze each person’s specific function and activity. This allows us to customize treatment exactly and to develop a highly personalized protocol for each person. The purpose is to neuromodulate the brain patterns to improve brain communication within itself.

We have treated hundreds of patients with ADHD here in San Diego and at our sister clinic in Newport Beach. Patients have indicated that they have experienced significant clinical improvements after going through their treatment protocols. *

Treatment usually lasts six weeks for ADHD. The appointments are Monday through Friday and last about 30 minutes. Once treatment is complete, its results are long-lasting and there is not usually any need for follow-up.

The equipment used is FDA-cleared to treat Major Depressive Disorder and OCD and is used off0label to treat other neurological-related conditions, including ADHD.

*Treatment results can vary from person to person and are not guaranteed.

What to Expect When Going Through Treatment

The first steps involved in getting MeRT treatment include first having a qEEG completed. This is a painless test that involves putting a cap on your head and using electrodes to record your specific brain wave activity. The cap is similar to what a swim cap looks like. We allow 45 minutes for this appointment. However, it usually takes about 12 to 15 minutes to get a good read.

If you are seeking treatment for your child who has autism, we allow up to an hour for the qEEG reading. Our technicians are experts dealing with developmentally delayed children and we can give you some practice tips before coming in for the appointment.

The second appointment is 45 minutes long. During this time, you will meet with Nurse Practitioner Kayleigh Prowse. This appointment serves as your consultation, and she will go over the results with you, along with an applicable treatment plan. Please be assured that all EEGs are reviewed first by our team of brain scientists and Dr. Julie Kim.

The Assessment Period

The assessment period of treatment lasts for two weeks. Treatment takes place every day, Monday through Friday, for a two-week duration. Appointments generally last 30-45 minutes.

At the end of the assessment period of treatment, we will repeat the qEEG to see if any changes are noted. We will also discuss any clinical changes that have been observed.

Ongoing Treatment

Once the assessment treatment period is completed and we are seeing improvements, we will get you or your child scheduled for the duration of the treatment schedule. Six weeks of treatment (which includes the assessment period) is recommended for optimal and long-lasting results.

Because each brain is unique, protocols will be different for each patient. Generally, the results of treatment can last a lifetime, though some patients prefer occasional follow-up treatment as needed.

Treatment Sessions

When you come into the clinic for your treatment, you will sit in a chair while your technician administers the treatment on the scalp via a hand-held magnet. Gentle magnetic pulses are delivered every 6 to 8 seconds of every minute. While you may feel a slight sensation during this time, it is not uncomfortable or painful.

Improvements and results are based on active and strict observation of our regimens. Results vary based on the individual and are not guaranteed.

Insurance Coverage

While we are an in-network provider for TriCare, patients must be 18 years or older for coverage. Additionally, TriCare will typically only consider coverage for treatment for Major Depressive Disorder and OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder).

For other insurance types, some patients have reported that they have been able to receive some reimbursement for EEGs or clinical evaluations, however, this depends on your health coverage. Medicare and Medicaid patients are not eligible for any reimbursement.

We do accept all major credit cards including Mastercard, Visa, American Express, and Discover.

We also accept Care Credit. Care Credit is a company that helps to finance medical expenses. They usually offer zero-interest financing for 12 months. They also may offer to finance for a longer duration as well. You can go to the Care Credit website and apply, and they will let you know promptly if you have been approved.

Conditions treatedOur New Patient Coordinator is here for you. She will take the time to answer any questions that you may have, listen to your concerns, carefully explain all the details, and confirm that we can treat your health issue.

If, after talking to her, you wish to further explore whether you could benefit from MeRT, the next step is to schedule your EEG and a consultation. With thorough diagnostics, the doctor can show you what is happening in your brain and what may be causing the issue. At this point, we can determine whether or not you may benefit from MeRT treatment. Then you can decide if you would like to move forward.
