As we have mentioned, no drug exists to treat the core characteristics of autism. However, certain drugs can ease other related symptoms, such as drugs for ADHD, anxiety, depression, irritability, self-injury, and more.
For example, doctors can prescribe stimulants to improve focus, SSRIs to treat depression, and antipsychotics for aggression. But each drug comes with side effects, and each child may react differently to a certain drug. This, then, can cause doctors to prescribe other drugs to deal with the side effects, which can become a downward spiral.
In addition, parents who don’t see improvements in their children will try different doctors. But each doctor may have their own way of dealing with autism and may prescribe different drugs without eliminating the ones the child is currently on. Or, even if they eliminate them, the new drugs may not work either.
